What is a Fractional CO2 Laser?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers emit gas as infrared light to treat dermatological lesions. They have been used for over 25 years in surgical procedures, aesthetic care, and dermatological treatments. They are effective for reducing medium and fine lines, scars, pigmentation disorders, and dilated pores.

Although highly effective, traditional CO2 lasers required long downtime and could cause redness lasting several months, which frustrated some patients.

However, progress has led to new practices like the fractional technique. Fractional CO2 lasers divide the laser beam into smaller beams spaced regularly to leave intervals of healthy skin intact, promoting quicker healing and shorter downtime.

Advantages

  • Effective treatment with noticeable results after the first session
  • Virtually painless procedure
  • Quick healing, typically within 6 days
  • No downtime, allowing for an immediate return to social and professional activities

Side effects:

After laser ablation, it is normal to experience reactions such as redness and swelling. However, despite the improved clinical tolerance of CO2 lasers, your doctor will monitor for potential complications.

  • Herpetic infections
  • Bacterial infections
  • Skin rash
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scarring

How is a Fractional CO2 Laser procedure performed?

A Fractionated CO2 laser procedure begins with the cleaning of the treatment area. Numbing cream is then applied and left for approximately 30 minutes. Afterward, the cream is wiped off, and the dermatologist performs the laser treatment. Unlike non-ablative lasers, which may require multiple passes, only one pass over the skin is typically needed with a CO2 laser due to its power and controlled settings. Following the treatment, a healing ointment is applied to the treated area. Patients are provided with gentle cleansers,  healing ointment, and hydrating lotions for aftercare. Throughout the procedure, a medical assistant is available for support and to answer any questions.

Does CO2 laser treatment cause pain?

The usual discomfort experienced during CO2 laser treatment is often likened to a rubber band snapping against the skin. As the laser is fractionated and treats the skin in numerous tiny dots, any discomfort is typically manageable with topical numbing cream. For those still sensitive to the procedure, our advanced cooling machine can help alleviate discomfort. We strive to provide our services comfortably and professionally, ensuring that you leave our facility feeling satisfied with positive memories.

Areas suitable for treatment with a fractional CO2 laser

While CO2 lasers are typically used for facial treatments, they may also be used on the following areas:

  • The neck
  • The chest area
  • The hands

Who is not a candidate for Fractional CO2 laser treatment?

Patients with darker skin tones, such as very dark or medium-dark skin, might not be suitable for CO2 laser treatment due to the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, our dermatologists can assess and adjust the CO2 laser device to make it safe for individuals with darker skin tones.

Individuals with a history of keloid formation are at risk of developing keloids after treatment.

For those with active acne, we recommend managing the acne before considering laser treatment for acne scars.

Patients who cannot commit to one week of post-procedure care should reconsider undergoing the procedure.

Most importantly, if someone has unrealistic expectations regarding the results of this treatment, we highly recommend scheduling a complimentary consultation with us for fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing.
